Entropy:

A condition in which a material system is driven away from stability through the deliberate application of force and risk. In this work, entropy is not passive decay but an imposed state—where glass is pushed beyond control through abrasion, cutting, heat, gravity, and movement.

What begins as a precise, stable plane is intentionally destabilized. Material is removed, continuity is broken, and voids emerge as energy passes through structure. Processes that normally unfold over centuries are compressed into the present, forcing the material to reorganize under stress.

Each distortion records a moment of transition, where chaos enters the system and order reorganizes into a new, unstable equilibrium.

Concept

This work treats entropy not as passive decay, but as an active, imposed condition. Glass is driven into instability through extreme processes—abrasion, deep cutting, heat, gravity, and movement—pushed far beyond conventional thresholds of control. What would normally unfold over centuries of geological time is violently compressed into the present, forcing the material to reorganize under stress. The resulting form is chaotic, aggressive, and, holding the visual intensity of fracture, collapse, and pressure without actually breaking apart. Each void, distortion, and softened edge records a moment where the material nearly fails—and sometimes does. The work emerges from repeated risk and loss, from techniques that operate at the edge of what glass can survive. Entropy here is not allowed to happen naturally; it is accelerated, provoked, and engineered. The piece exists as evidence of that confrontation: a state where control is continuously challenged, where structure resists disappearance, and where chaos is not aestheticized, but embedded into the material itself.

ABOUT

Orfeo Quagliata

I am an artist and designer based in Mexico City, where for over 25 years I have explored and pushed the boundaries of glass through experimentation and material innovation. My work exists at the intersection of art, design, and architecture, often combining glass with steel, stone, and other materials.

Through Studio Orfeo Quagliata, I collaborate closely with architects, interior designers, and global brands such as Swarovski, Samsung, Netflix, and Don Julio, creating bespoke pieces, sculptural editions, and large-scale installations that challenge conventional ideas of what glass can be.
